It took a new owner, a new GM, a new HC, and a new QB but the Commanders finally find a year of success against the Giants. Daniel Jones went into this game 5-2-1 against the Commanders.
It was a chilly day– 53 degrees Fahrenheit at kickoff in East Rutherford.
The Commanders started the game off strong with a fumble in the first quarter. A heads up play where Bobby Wagner picked up the ball after the play was blown dead.
The Commanders followed that with a 1-yard McLaurin touchdown. That was McLaurin’s fifth touchdown grab of the year. In the new regime McLaurin has been targeted at a much higher rate in the redzone.
Then in the second quarter we saw an Austin Ekeler 1-yard touchdown rush and with six seconds left in the quarter Jayden Daniels hit one of his favorite target Terry McLaurin with an absolute beauty of a pass over Deonte Banks.
The Giants were able to get a short passing touchdown during the second quarter as well.
During the second half of the game however, the giants were able to find more success. The Giants ended the first half with -8 passing yards. In the second half they were able to break through the Commanders secondary and they kept a steady rushing game leading them to grabbing two touchdowns (both with unsuccessful two-point conversions) and a field goal.
The Commanders also slowed down on offense, trying to rely more on the run which lead to some more dry possessions. They were able to convert on two field goals and hold control of the game.
Jayden Daniels ended the game with 209 yards 2 TDs and 35 rushing yards. He also ended the game with 0 sacks, against the Giants who had the most sacks on the season.
Chris Rodriguez was a nice addition to the offense with 11 carries for 52 yards. Noah Brown had an impressive game with 5 grabs for 60 yards. And Terry McLaurin had 2 catches for 2 touchdowns and 19 yards.
On the defensive end Dante Fowler Jr had 2 sacks and a FF, another impressive outing. Arguably the most impressive member of the defense was Jeremy Chinn however who had 13 total tackles, two of which being behind the line of scrimmage.
Commanders did great in the trenches and through the air but most importantly to their ability to control the game was holding onto the football. They won the turnover battle 1-0.
The Commanders now go back to DC to play against the 6-2 Steelers coming off of a bye in what should be a good game. The game will be at 1pm next Sunday on CBS.
